Answer: In order to be a Purchasing Management professional at minimum you should have a business background.  Knowledge of the flow of business processes is very helpful.  It depends on the industry you are in , skills will vary.  For example, if you are in the manufacturing industry, it is good to have understanding of the role purchasing plays in the manufacturing process.  It is a good idea to understand the role and functions of purchasing.  Purchasing is much more involved than just buying products.  Depending on the industry, a Purchasing Management professional can get involved with forecasting, planning, and budgeting.
